Boys Varsity Track, Girls Varsity Track · Girls Track First and Boys Track Third At Michigan City


Both the boys and girls track teams traveled to Michigan City High School on Wednesday to open up the 2018 outdoor season. With a decent night of weather, and finishing in the dark in the 4×400, the Eagles performed well.

The won with a score of 117.5 points and the boys finished 3rd with 63.6 points.

Some of the highlights for the girls include Senior Joselyn Mwenifumbo in her four events both on the track and in the field. Mwenifumbo won the 100 Hurdles in 15.14. She repeated in the 300 Hurdles with a split of 47.76. In the field Mwenifumbo competed in the Long Jump and High Jump. In the long jump she jumped 17’1” and in the high jump she tied her personal best in the event with a leap of 5’2”.

Junior Janiya Coleman placed first in both the 100 and the 200 dashes, winning the 100 in a time of 12.6 and the 200 with a 29.28.

Also taking first in the distance events, Senior Niki Hakimzadeh finished in the top place in the 1600 Run in 6:03. Freshman Ivie Skube was also first in the 3200 Run with a run of 12:33.

The girls 4×800 of Hannah Mihut, Ivie Skube, Cecilia Toscano, and Isabelle McCown took first place with a performance of 11:40.

The 4×400 was also victorious with members Ali Mihut, Jordan Mihut, Kierra Watford, and Armani Stroud running a time of 4:34 in the almost complete dark.

In the field, besides Mwenifumbo’s wins in the long jump and high jump, Freshman Alecia Parker won the shot put with a throw of 35’0”.

On the boys side the relays all performed well. The tone was set early with the 4×800 consisting of Julio Martinez, Joe Karban, Alex Blade, and Elmer Blakemore. The team won in 9:28, nearly 10 seconds ahead of the competition.

The Eagles also won the final event of the evening, the 4×400. The team of Jalen Wright, Ngor Agwick, Jonathan Ngangi, and Jaleel Dotson won with a time of 3:41.

In a battle in the Pole Vault, Juniors Tommy Han and Dominique Clark battled it out until the sun set and the event was suspended due to darkness. Han and Clark had a three way tie for first at 11’0”.

The final first place position for the boys came in the 400 Dash. Senior Jaleel Dotson took first in 53.69.

The teams return to action after Spring Break on Tuesday April 10 in a CoEd Home Meet against Elkhart Central and SB Washington.
