It is one of the largest high school wrestling events outside of the IHSAA State Finals, and the John Adams wrestling team competed in the 42nd Al Smith Invitational beginning on Friday. The tournament features many of the top teams and individuals from throughout the state and isa good prep for the upcoming championship season that begins in a few weeks.
In the first day of competition, Adams wrestlers in many weight classes competed. The top eight in each weight class advance to Day 2 of the invitational on Saturday.
Junior Jonathan Thomas will advance to Saturday in the 220 weight class. Thomas went 3-1 on Friday. In the first round Thomas won by major decision 15-3. In Round 2 Thomas won by Fall at 1:05. Unfortunately Thomas lost in the quarterfinals by decision 4-3, his first loss of the year. In the consolation round he won by decision 6-3.
Dominique Clark went 1-2 at 152 pounds, winning in sudden victory 5-3 but falling in round 2 and in the consolation round.
At 195 pounds, Horace Hill also went 1-2. Hill won in the first round by decision 5-2 and lost in the second round and in the consolation round.
Joe was 1-2 as well at 285 pounds, winning the first round by Fall at 3:31, the losing in the next round and consolation round as well.
John Burford was 0-2 at 132 pounds, Jacob Harsh went 0-2 at 138 pounds, and Camden Hanks went 0-2 at 160 pounds.
At the end of day 1 John Adams is in 31st place with 16 points.
