The quest to play at Victory Field in the State Finals began on Thursday night for the Adams Baseball team.
Adams opened up play in the 4A Sectional at Plymouth, taking on the SB Clay Colonials, just over a week since the teams last played. This time it was win or go home, and the two teams took it to extra innings, but the Eagles came away with the win to advance in the tournament.
At the end of the first the Eagles struck first with two Adams runners on base. Gabe Sgattone hit a ground ball single which allowed Ben Thompson to score.
Clay eventually took the lead, up 4-1 as the game entered the bottom of the fifth. Jacaar Watkins had a big play to bring the Eagles back within a few. Watkins walked, then stole for both second and then third and would go and score on a ground out from Zach Gray.
In the sixth, Adams tied it up with Runs from Bryce Martens and Josh Allen.
With the game tied up 4-4, the Colonials and Eagles went to extra innings. Watkins reached base on a dropped third strike. Adams would get bases loaded with a walk from Thompson and Brock Notestine getting hit by a pitch. Brendan Foster hit a single that drove in the winning run from Watkins to win the game.
Bryce Martens was the winning pitcher from the hill, coming in to pitch for three innings allowing no runs, only two hits and striking out 3 batters.
Adams will face off against Mishawaka High School in the Sectional Semifinals on Saturday afternoon.
