It was a night for bragging rights in South Bend as well as an important Northern Indiana Conference meeting between the John Adams Girls Basketball team and the South Bend Riley Lady Wildcats. The Lady Eagles took to the road in the rivalry game, looking for bragging rights between the two teams over the next calendar year.
It was a game that at times went back and forth as the two teams battled for control of the game. Through the first eight minutes of action, the Eagles and Wildcats were all tied up at the quarter break. Through the second quarter, both teams gutted it out, with the quest of taking the lead into the locker room at the half. It was Riley who was able to get the advantage at halftime, with a slight edge on Adams, leading by 7 points.
That lead did not last for long, as the Eagles were not content with staying behind. With six points from Daquejiha Voughn and another six points from Marissa Shelton, Adams took the lead at the end of the third quarter.
In the final eight minutes of action as the teams battled on, it was Riley who came out with the final lead, outscoring Adams by 10 points in the fourth quarter.
Adams lost with a final score of 59-52.
Shelton was the leading scorer for Adams, ending the night with an outstanding 23 points. Shelton was impressive from beyond the arc as well, scoring 12 of her points off of three pointers. She was also 3 for 4 from the free throw line. Voughn ended the evening with 13 points and was also 3 for 4 from the line.
Laila Williams scored 8 points, Whitney Marshall 4 points, and Loryn Higginbotham and Anna Fuller both had 2 points each.
Adams falls to 2-4 on the season and 1-3 in the NIC. The Lady Eagles will play again on Thursday night when they travel to play non conference opponent Wawasee.
