Two Adams Wrestlers competed among the best of the best on Saturday at the Al Smith Invitational hosted by Mishawaka HS.
Both Horace Hill and Joe Phillips advanced to wrestle on the final day of the tournament after finishing 3-1 on the opening day of action on Friday.
Hill, wrestling at 220 pounds, opened up the day for Adams against Center Grove. Hill won his match in the fifth consolation round by Decision with a score of 7-3. In the Consolation Semifinals, Hill won a closely contested match over Elkhart Central by Decision with a score of 5-3. The win set Hill to move to the third place match. Hill battled it out through all three periods giving it his all but ultimately lost the match to Mishawaka by Decision with a score of 6-0. Hill finished 4th overall at 220 pounds.
Phillips was guaranteed a top 8 spot on the podium no matter the result of his action on the mat on Saturday. In the first match of the day in the consolation round 5, Phillips lost to Northridge after falling on a pin early on in the third period. The loss put Phillips in the 7th place match. Things did not go Phillips’ way and he lost after getting pinned early on in the second period to Goshen.
Both Hill and Phillips finished as medalists in the highly competitive event.
Adams finished tied for 30th place overall with a team score of 39 points.
Overall in the tournament Adams had 4 pins over their opponents and a total of 81 match points overall.
