Boys Varsity Wrestling, Coed Varsity Wrestling · Wrestling Opens Up Competition at Al Smith Invite


Outside of the IHSAA State Finals, the Al Smith Invite is one of the busiest and most competitive events in wrestling in the state. On Friday, the Adams Wrestling team opened up competition against some of the best of the best in the state. Eight wrestlers for Adams competed in the opening rounds of the invitational hosted annually at Mishawaka HS.

Jacob Harsh went 0-2 wrestling at 132 pounds. Harsh lost in the opening round to Warsaw on a Fall and in the Consolation round, lost to Perry Meridian on A Fall.

At 138 pounds, Ryan Downey went 1-2. Downey lost in the first round to Garrett on a Fall. In the Consolation Round, Downey won over Center Grove after a disqualification from the Center Grove Wrestler. Unfortunately Downey had to forfeit his next match and was eliminated from competition.

Joshua Vasquez went 0-2 at 145 pounds. Vasquez lost in the first round on a Fall to Lake Central. In the Consolation Round Vasquez lost to LaPorte on a Fall.

At 152 pounds Oscar Torres also finished 0-2. In the first round Torres fell on a pin to Northridge. In the first Consolation round Torres lost in a close match by decision with a score of 9-7 to Warsaw.

Chykeem Crawford was able to turn things around for Adams, winning his opening round match at 182 pounds. Crawford won over Warsaw by Decision with a score of 12-8. In Round 2, Crawford lost  after getting pinned by Columbus East. Moving to the consolation round, Crawford lost after getting pinned by Northridge. Crawford finished 1-2.

CamdenHanks also won his opening round match at 195 pounds. Hanks won by forfeit taking him to the second round. In Round 2 Hanks lost by Fall to Chesterton. In the Second Consolation round Hanks lost by Decision 8-2  to Columbus East. Hanks finished the day 1-2.

It was Horace Hill and Joe Phillips who had the most success for Adams. Both Hill and Phillis would wrestle their way into the final day of action in the tournament on Saturday as a result of their performance on the mat.

Hill, wrestling at 220 pounds went 3-1 on the first day of action. In the opening round, Hill won over Bellmont after a pin early on in the second period. In Round 2, Hill battled it out with Garrett before getting the upper hand in the third period and won on Fall. In the Quarterfinals though Hill lost after a tough match to SB Riley, losing on a Fall late in his match. Moving into the Consolation Round, Hill was able to bounce back and got the win over Prairie Heights, winning by Fall. The win in the consolation bracket moved Hill to the next days action.

Phillips went 3-1 as well wrestling at 285 pounds on the first day. Phillips won his opening round match by forfeit. In the second round, Phillips was able to get the win after pinning Garrett as time neared the end of the first period. In the Quarterfinals, Phillips lost his match by Decision with a score of 8-3. In the consolation bracket, Phillips was able to get the win to close out the long day of action. It took extra time however as Phillips won in Sudden Victory over Lowell with a final score of 4-2.

Both Hill and Phillips will wrestle on the final day on Saturday.
