Thee John Adams Wrestlers will be advancing to the IHSAA Regional after competing on Saturday in the Mishawaka Sectional. Andrew Hernandez, Chykeem Crawford, and Joe Phillips all finished in 3rd place in their respective weight classes and moved on to next week’s Regional.
As a team, Adams finished in 5th place overall with a score of 94 points.
Hernandez, wrestling in the 113 pound weight class won his opening match in the Quarterfinals by forfeit. In the semifinals, Hernandez lost to his Penn opponent by fall, getting pinned just over a minute into the match. In the consolation semifinals, Hernandez won by forfeit, putting him in the third place match. In the match, with about 30 seconds left in the second period, Hernandez won by fall over his SB Riley opponent,
Wrestling at 182 pounds, Crawford lost his opening match in the quarterfinals. Crawford would have to work his way back through the consolation bracket in order to qualify for the Regional. Crawford lost to his Penn opponent by Decision with a score of 6-5. Moving to the consolation round, Crawford won by fall, pinning his Marian opponent just over 30 seconds into the second round. In the consolation semifinals, Crawford won again, this time by Decision, fighting hard against SB Clay but coming out with the 9-8 victory. Advancing into the 3rd place match, Crawford outlasted his Penn opponent, winning by Decision with a match score of 6-1.
Phillips, the final qualifier for the Regional finished third in the 285 pound weight class. Phillips won his opening match in the quarterfinals, winning by fall, pinning his St Joseph opponent just about halfway through the third period. In the semifinals, Phillips and his Penn opponent battled for control but ultimately lost after three periods by Decision 1-0. In the consolation semifinal, Phillips worked his way back, winning by fall, getting the pin over his Clay opponent. In the 3rd place match, Phillips got the upper hand over his Mishawaka opponent, winning by Decision with a score of 5-0.
There were several Eagles wrestlers who compete well but did not advance out of the Sectional. At 06 pounds, Ashlyn Wiggins finished the day with a record of 2-2. Winning two matches by forfeit and losing her other two matches by getting pinned and finishing in 5th place.
Jacob Harsh, wrestling at 132 pounds finished 0-2.
Ryan Downey finished 5th at 138 pounds going 2-2 for the day. Downey won his opening match, pinning his St Joseph opponent just 23 seconds into the match. Downey narrowly lost his match in the semifinals, getting pinned with just seconds remaining in the match. Downey again lost by a slim margin in the consolation semifinals to Slay with a score of 6-5 in the match. Downey won the 5th place match after a forfeit by Penn.
Josh Vasquez finished 5th as well, Wrestling at 145 pounds, Vasquez finished 2-2. Vasquez lost his match in the quarterfinals, but won by fall, pinning his SB Washington opponent just 27 seconds into the match. Vasquez lost by fall in the consolation semifinals, but came back in the 5th place match to win, winning by fall over Mishawaka Marian.
At 152 pounds, Melvin Torres went 2-2, finishing in 5th place. Torres lost his quarterfinal match, won his consolation semifinal match by forfeit, lost his consolation semifinal match, and then won his last match of the day, the 5th place match. With just seconds to go in the opening round, Torres won by fall, pinning his Marian opponent.
Finally, finishing in 6th place at 195 pounds, Camden Hanks went 1-3 for the day. Hanks fought hard in all of his matches but was only able to win by forfeit in the consolation round.
The Eagles will compete again at next week’s IHSAA Penn Regional.
