John Adams Cheerleading Tryouts 

2020-2021 Football/Basketball Season

Purpose of JAHS Cheerleading:  The purpose of the John Adams Cheerleaders is to lead the student body in the demonstration of school spirit and good sportsmanship at athletic events, to encourage attendance at school events, and to perform at a level of excellence, which develops leadership qualities and skills, as well as be a source of pride to the school and themselves.

Preparation for Tryouts:  Potential cheerleaders should wear JA school colors, a bow, appropriate athletic shoes, and a smile. Please stretch and bring water for scheduled breaks.

Tryouts: Note that this tryout is for BOTH cheer seasons, Football and Basketball. You may try out for both or just one. Tryouts will begin promptly on MONDAY, July 6th, 2020.  “Camp Days” or days we learn material will be as follows:

  • Monday, July 6th 9AM-11AM | Location: C Gym
  • Wednesday, July 8th 9AM-11AM | Location: C Gym
  • Thursday, July 9th 9AM-11AM | Location: C Gym

Tryout Day will begin promptly at 9AM on July 10th, in the C Gym. No one will be allowed to tryout unless they have been cleared by the athletic office.   Required forms are all online at  All students need to register on Eventlink.  The office will not be open to pick up any forms.  We advise having this done ahead of time.  

On Monday, July 6, students should plan on entering door 6.  Pre-screening will be done outside of the C Gym. 

 Athletes will be expected to perform the following at tryouts:

  • The School Song
  • Two Jumps
  • An Individual Cheer/Chant (that has been made up on their own, words and motions)
  • Demonstrate Tumbling Ability, if applicable
  • A dance/chant that is taught during camp to everyone

We are looking for cheerleaders that demonstrate the following:

ACADEMICS: Cheerleaders will be expected to keep grades and GPA up to the SBCSC policy. If cheerleaders fall behind in class, it is their responsibility to contact their teacher(s) to make up any work. Cheerleaders are expected to attend every class period, and respect their teachers and the administration. 

ATTITUDE:  Cheerleaders who are positive, eager to learn, demonstrate strong leadership skills, and have the ability to work well with a team and cooperate with coaches!

ABILITY:  Cheerleaders with the ability to perform skills and have the necessary voice projection.

POSITION:  Cheerleaders who can fit a need for the squad’s overall balance (bases, flyers, tumblers, etc.).


Students may attend tryouts ONLY after completing all paperwork required by the South Bend School District and John Adams High School.  This includes payment of the insurance fee.  The required forms are located in the athletic office.

Please understand that there are many financial obligations associated with cheerleading. For NEW cheerleaders, the tentative items to be purchased are as follows and subject to change:

  • Warm Up Jacket
  • Warm Up Pants
  • Cheer Bow
  • Cheer Shoes
  • Poms
  • Spanks

**For returning cheerleaders, note that you will not have to purchase new poms, spanks or shoes if you still have yours from previous seasons and are in good condition.

** Please note that being on the squad in previous years DOES NOT guarantee a spot for your child on the squad this year.
